The Minnesota River Valley Education District Collaborative (MRVED), comprised of five area school districts including Montevideo, MACCRAY, Lakeview, Renville County West and Yellow Medicine East in partnership with the SW MN Private Industry Council (PIC) (www.swmnpic.org) hosted their first local Tour of Manufacturing Event in three local towns, Montevideo, Prinsberg and Granite Falls, MN on October 22nd , eighty seven students from grades 9-12th participated in the day.
There are incredible employment and training opportunities within the Manufacturing industry, in Rural Minnesota, but unfortunately many students and their families are not aware of them. It is critical to engage and retain our future workforce and develop the awareness of opportunity in our local areas.
As a part of Manufacturing month (October), manufactures host tours statewide for local high school students and parents to learn about the modernization and opportunities in the manufacturing industry. Granite Falls Energy, Prinsco, SpecSys, Chandler Industries, Ametek, and American Surplus participated on Oct 22nd. Students participated in four different tours throughout the day and took a lunch break at Minnesota West Community and Technical College- Granite Falls. During lunch, students listened to guest speaker Luke Greiner, a regional analyst, who spoke on the importance of career exploration and the availability of good paying jobs with minimal education requirements. Students loved the opportunity to see inside the buildings they often drove past, but didn’t know what was inside. It was very engaging and educational for the students who participated! Next year there is hope to increase the different businesses students can tour and we hope more students will also attend.
