This 5-minute video highlights some of the opportunities and lifestyle that are available in our region. This short video includes conversations with people who have chosen to make southwest Minnesota their home, and what keeps them here. It is part of a collaborative project between the SW MN Workforce Council, the Hennepin-Carver Workforce Board, funded through a grant from the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership Board.

What does it cost to live in southwest Minnesota?

DEED’s Cost of Living Tool provides a yearly estimate of the basic-needs cost of living for individuals and families. The tool uses data to examine monthly living costs in seven categories: food, housing, health care, transportation, child care, other necessities, and net taxes.

Southwest Minnesota is a great place to raise children!

Here’s an interactive map published in the New York Times; The Best and Worst Places to Grow Up: How Your Area Compares. The article related to the interactive map discusses upward mobility in urban areas. Looking at the map through a rural development lens it is easy to see that there is another narrative suggested by this analysis; rural areas across the great plains are great places for upward mobility among children. This is more evidence of what migrating young families have known for the past 30 years. Rural areas are great places to raise children. Southwest Minnesota has the best weather in the state!

If you’re looking for the best weather in Minnesota you can’t beat the southern part of the state, assuming you think good weather means sun. But if we want to get specific, there are a few standout counties with the most sunny days, and the highest winter temperatures (even though they’re still in the single digits…). As far as MN weather goes, these 10 are pretty unbeatable – and all of them are in southwest Minnesota!
