Summer Internship Program

Connecting College Students with businesses in southwest Minnesota

The Summer Internship Program is a collaboration between participating southwest Minnesota counties and the Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council (PIC). The program connects college students with local businesses for a paid internship where they can gain professional experience and learn what local employers have to offer.

This program aims to expose college students to careers and the diverse opportunities available in southwest Minnesota while earning up to $17/hour for the allowed hours per week, depending on the county. Salaries for internships are generously funded by the county commissioners for each individual program.

Currently, the following counties are participating in the Summer Internship Program:

  • Nobles County: Entering its fourth summer, the Nobles County Internship Program continues to connect college students with a wide range of local employers. The program offers meaningful, paid work experiences across multiple industries while helping students build professional skills and explore career opportunities right here in Nobles County.

  • Murray County: Now in its third summer, the Murray County Internship Program has built strong momentum, providing students with hands-on professional experiences in fields such as healthcare, social services, manufacturing, and business. The program supports workforce development by encouraging students to gain experience and consider long-term careers in the region.

  • Swift County: Entering its second summer, the Swift County Internship Program continues to grow, connecting local students with businesses and organizations throughout the county. The program focuses on offering practical work experience that aligns with students’ areas of study while strengthening the local workforce pipeline.

  2. Once accepted, Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council staff will connect you with a business that fits your field of study and career goals.
  3. Next, you will interview at your worksite of choice.
  4. Finally, complete orientation and start your internship experience.

Steps to Apply as a Business

  2. After applying as a worksite, Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council will work to connect you with an intern that fits your request.
  3. Next, your prospective intern will interview you.
  4. Finally, when an intern is placed at your business, they will complete orientation and begin working with you!
