Enrique’s Journey: Overcoming Barriers and Rebuilding His Future

enrique When Enrique enrolled in our SNAP Employment & Training (SNAP E&T) program, he arrived with determination and a strong desire to work. He had excellent communication skills, a positive attitude, and a track record of landing interviews, but one significant barrier stood in his way: a felony conviction on his record. Despite his qualifications, Enrique was repeatedly turned down for positions after background checks were completed.

Recognizing both his potential and the challenges ahead, our team partnered closely with Enrique through personalized, one-on-one career coaching. Together, we addressed how to navigate conversations about his background with honesty and confidence. We conducted mock interviews and worked on ways to briefly acknowledge his past, without dwelling on it, and then redirect the conversation toward his strengths, highlighting his reliability, work ethic, and commitment to building a better future.

In addition to coaching, we provided practical resources to support his job search, including gas cards to help him get to and from interviews. Every small resource added up to a larger impact, ensuring transportation wasn’t a barrier to opportunity.

With persistence, encouragement, and the necessary tools, Enrique landed a job as a cook at a local bar and restaurant, marking a significant step back into the workforce. He’s grateful for the chance to prove himself and is already setting his sights on the next stage of his career. Enrique continues to work with our team to explore opportunities that align with his long-term goals and personal growth.

Enrique’s story is a powerful example of resilience, second chances, and the importance of having a support system. Through the SNAP E&T program, individuals like Enrique aren’t just finding jobs, they’re finding renewed confidence, dignity, and hope for a brighter future.
