After 13 years with the same employer, Allan never expected to find himself starting over. When he unexpectedly lost his job, he and his wife, Jessica, relied on her income and SNAP benefits while Allan began searching for his next opportunity.
Rather than becoming discouraged, Allan immediately focused on building a new path forward. He set a goal of earning his GED and began studying while also exploring opportunities to earn his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
The family soon faced another challenge when Jessica lost her job as well. They enrolled in cash assistance while working to regain financial stability. Jessica quickly found new employment, allowing Allan to care for their child while continuing to work toward his education and career goals.
With support through the SNAP Employment and Training (SNAP E&T) program, Allan earned his GED and enrolled in CDL training at Minnesota West Community and Technical College. He successfully completed both the classroom and driving portions of the program and earned his CDL.
At the same time, Jessica excelled in her new position and earned a promotion. Together, their hard work and determination helped the family regain financial stability and achieve self-sufficiency. Today, Allan and Jessica no longer rely on public assistance, and Allan's newly earned GED and CDL have opened the door to new employment opportunities.
Allan and Jessica's journey shows how determination, combined with employment and training support, can help families overcome unexpected challenges, gain new skills, and build a stronger future.
