Alejandro enrolled in the Welding program at Minnesota West’s Jackson campus while continuing to work part time at Mountain Power Hydraulics. Although his employer wasn’t able to assist financially, they supported his journey by allowing a flexible work schedule. Still, returning to school required sacrifice. Alejandro moved out of the home he loved and into his parents’ basement. His sister stepped in to help cover bills, and his girlfriend loaned him her vehicle so he could get to and from campus.
Those sacrifices fueled Alejandro’s determination. He knew too many people were invested in his success for him to fall short. Excelling in school became not just a goal, but a responsibility.
Through support from the Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council (PIC), Alejandro found the guidance and resources he needed to stay on track. Enrolled through the Transformative Grant, he gained access to tools and assistance that helped turn his ambition into reality.
What began as a financially motivated decision quickly became something more. As Alejandro progressed through the program, he discovered a genuine passion for welding. His instructor played a key role in that transformation by helping him build confidence, sharpen his skills, and find purpose in the trade.
Alejandro graduated with high honors, earning a 3.89 GPA, an achievement he considers one of his proudest accomplishments.
Today, Alejandro has transitioned into a welding role at Mountain Power Hydraulics. He started at $22 per hour, with a clear path to reaching $25 far sooner than he would have in his previous position. With benefits including a 401(k) match and long-term career growth, Alejandro is no longer just getting by, he’s building a future.
“I am especially grateful for the workforce center,” Alejandro shared. “They gave me the tools I needed to accomplish my dream.”
Now, with both financial stability and a passion for his work, Alejandro is looking ahead to a lifelong career in welding, one built on perseverance, support, and the belief that investing in yourself is always worth it.
