Celebrating 40 Years of Workforce Innovation and Impact in Southwest Minnesota

On July 1, 2025, the Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council (PIC) celebrates a remarkable milestone: 40 years of service to the communities, businesses, and people of Southwest Minnesota. Since its founding in 1985, PIC has remained a steadfast partner in building a stronger, more resilient regional workforce, helping thousands of individuals find meaningful careers and supporting employers in meeting their workforce needs.

Over the past four decades, PIC has proudly served thousands of individuals. From helping high school students land their first jobs and discover career pathways, to assisting parents and low-income adults in breaking the cycle of poverty, to supporting laid-off workers navigating career changes, the Southwest Minnesota PIC has been there every step of the way.

Programs like the Youth Career Connector have introduced students to in-demand careers and connected them with local employers, while Career Pathways initiatives have provided short-term, credentialed training opportunities in high-need industries such as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Welding, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), and more. These programs have given individuals the skills, confidence, and opportunities needed to build better futures.

As the economy and workforce have evolved, so too has PIC. The organization was an early implementor of the nationally recognized, evidence-based Career Pathways model, acknowledging that accessible, accelerated training is key to helping people quickly move into high-demand careers. PIC has adapted to meet the shifting needs of industries in the region, providing customized support to both jobseekers and businesses.

For employers, PIC has provided access to critical services, including labor market data analysis, workforce development training, and assistance in connecting with skilled employees. By facilitating employer-led conversations around workforce trends, barriers, and solutions, PIC has helped shape a thriving regional economy.

None of this work would be possible without the dedicated partnerships PIC has cultivated over 40 years. Collaboration is at the heart of everything PIC does — working alongside county governments, education, llocal employers, regional development commissions, foundations, chambers of commerce, and local economic development offices.

Together, these partnerships have amplified the impact of workforce development services, ensuring resources are obtained and aligned, opportunities are accessible, and Southwest Minnesota remains a place where people and businesses can thrive.

Behind every program and initiative are stories of resilience, achievement, and transformation. These stories — often shared through PIC’s newsletters, social media, and annual reports — are a testament to the life-changing work that has defined the organization’s mission.

As Southwest Minnesota faces new opportunities and challenges in workforce development, the Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council remains committed to its mission: creating and sustaining a skilled, diverse workforce that meets the needs of regional employers and strengthens local communities.

Our work is about people, partnerships, and possibilities,” says Carrie Bendix, Executive Director of the Southwest Minnesota PIC. As we reflect on the past 40 years, we’re proud of the lives we’ve touched and the economic vitality we’ve helped create. And we’re even more excited for what’s ahead.”

As the PIC enters its fifth decade of service, the commitment to innovation, collaboration, and community impact remains stronger than ever.
