Beatriz always knew she wanted a career helping others. When she first entered college, she planned to pursue a biology degree and follow the path toward becoming a physician assistant. However, during her freshman year, she discovered a passion for working more closely with patients. That realization led her to change her major to nursing, a decision she now describes as the best choice she ever made.
As a first-generation college student from Worthington, Beatriz faced challenges navigating higher education. Understanding financial aid, scholarships, and the FAFSA process initially felt overwhelming. The academic demands of nursing school also proved to be significantly different from her high school experience. Recognizing she needed support, Beatriz sought guidance from her advisor, who became an essential part of her success, providing encouragement and reassurance throughout her academic journey.
Beatriz also found a strong sense of community through POC clubs at her school, where she connected with other first-generation college students who shared similar experiences. These connections reminded her that she was not alone in her journey.
Financial support played a crucial role in allowing Beatriz to remain focused on her studies. After enrolling in the WIOA Adult Program in July 2024, she received scholarship assistance, including support from the Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council. With help from her Career Specialist, Sandy Demuth, Beatriz reduced financial stress and fully dedicated herself to completing her rigorous nursing program.
Her hard work and determination paid off. On May 17, 2025, Beatriz graduated from the College of St. Benedict with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, earning an impressive 4.00 GPA while completing 164 college credits.
Following graduation, Beatriz chose to return to Worthington to give back to the community that raised her. Today, she works as a Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse at Sanford Worthington Medical Center, the very hospital where she was born. In her role, Beatriz finds fulfillment in caring for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments. She enjoys building connections with patients, learning new skills each day, and working alongside a supportive team that continues to help her grow as a nurse.
Looking ahead, Beatriz plans to continue advancing her education by pursuing a Nurse Practitioner degree. She credits her success to the many individuals and programs that supported her along the way and hopes her journey inspires others to pursue their goals, even when the path feels challenging.
