Success Story: Alfred’s Journey from Uncertainty to Achievement

alfred When Alfred moved from Puerto Rico to Windom, MN, in 2022, he was ready to build a new life for his family. He found steady work in maintenance at the HyLife plant and began to settle into his new community. But just a year and a half later, everything changed when HyLife closed its doors, leaving Alfred jobless and uncertain about what came next.

“I remember him crying,” recalled his Career Specialist, Sandy Demuth. “He was new to the country, supporting his household, and suddenly without work. He was scared about everything but he was determined to move forward.”

Through the Dislocated Worker Program, Alfred learned about the opportunity to return to school and pursue a new career. He enrolled in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) program at South Central College in Mankato in August 2023. With support from the program, Alfred received help covering tools, equipment, and other essentials he needed for success.

“At first, I didn’t know what to do,” Alfred shared during a speech at the Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council’s 40th Anniversary celebration. “But thankfully I heard from Sandy about a program that made going back to school an option. I had always wanted to go back to school, and I thought it was a great opportunity to start something new.”

Alfred quickly proved that he was up for the challenge. After his first semester, he realized, “Going back to school wasn’t so bad and I had all A’s for the first time in my life!” He went on to graduate with high honors, earning a 3.93 GPA in May 2025.

Today, Alfred is working full-time in a stable, rewarding HVAC position and preparing to welcome a new baby with his wife. “This program can help a lot of people,” Alfred said. “There are a lot of people who don’t know about the help they can get. I appreciate everything the program has done for me in helping my future.”
